EPAM Systems Inc. is another company that joined us recently and Petar Kozjak is their Director of Software Engineering and Croatia Country Head. With more than 20 years of experience in the IT world, Petar enjoys leading projects, consulting with clients, and mentoring new developers.

He is also the EPAM team representative who told us more about this new member of the Split Tech City community.

What can you tell us about the EPAM, its team, and the work you do?

EPAM is a leading company in digital transformation services and product engineering – operating in more than 50+ countries with nearly 60,000 employees. It was founded in 1993 and is headquartered in Newtown, Pennsylvania, USA.

We provide digital transformation services, including software engineering, digital and physical product development, and technology consulting.

Our clients range from innovative startups to Fortune 500 companies across various industries, including financial services, healthcare, travel and hospitality, retail and media, and entertainment.

We’ve relied on our ‘Engineering DNA’ to underpin our work with clients, leading to major innovations, digital transformations, and business results. We entered the Croatian market in the summer of 2021 with the acquisition of the Emakina Group.

Emakina Croatia became part of EPAM Croatia, from which we embraced new lines of high-performance creative services.

Our brick-and-mortar office is in Zagreb; however, our employees can work remotely from anywhere within Croatia.”

What are your plans regarding hiring new team members at your office in Split?

“We are continuously looking for the best talent to join our team. While we do not have a physical office in Split, we are committed to actively supporting tech/IT communities and participating in various technology conferences across all of Croatia (DeBug, KulenDayz, Java Cro, also Infobip Shift).

In addition, we regularly organize meetups, both in person and online, which we would like to expand in the Split area. We believe in investing in people and are proud of our collaboration with reputable tech universities in Croatia.”

Are there any collaborations or projects the EPAM team has been working on that you would like to highlight?

“As a recognized leader, EPAM is listed among the top 15 companies in Information Technology Services on the Fortune 1000 and ranked four times as the top IT services company on Fortune’s 100 Fastest Growing Companies list.

We enable customers to reimagine their businesses through a digital lens and help them become faster, more agile, and more adaptive enterprises by delivering solutions through best-in-class engineering, strategy, design, consulting, education, and innovation services.

For instance, during the pandemic, businesses have been forced to expedite their digital transformation projects. We have worked closely with our global customers to help them become digital at their core – transforming not only their technology strategy but also business, design, and operations to run smarter and faster.

We’ve helped more than 280 Forbes Global 2000 customers solve their most complex technology challenges in the following industries:

  • Financial Services
  • Media, Entertainment &Telecom
  • Business Information Services
  • Retail & Distribution
  • Software & Hi-Tech
  • Travel & Hospitality
  • Life Sciences
  • Healthcare
  • Energy & Utilities
  • Automotive & Manufacturing
  • Insurance

For additional insight into our work, you can read some spectacular client stories on our website!”

Which technologies does the EPAM team use in the daily work you do?

“We’ve partnered with more than 160 leading technology companies, including but not limited to Sitecore, SAP, Acquia, Adobe, Google Cloud, Salesforce, Microsoft Azure, AWS, and commerce tools.

We use Agile methodology in most cases and the most common technologies we use are Java, .NET, JS, and PHP, all the way up to (A)QA, DevOps, and Bis.

Technical excellence is highly valued at EPAM; therefore, it is important to highlight our continuous learning culture.

To deliver the newest technology and continued innovation to our clients, we provide unlimited learning and development opportunities to our colleagues.”

What comparison can you make regarding the Croatian tech scene five years ago and now?

“We are all witnessing numerous innovations and a rapidly expanding tech scene. However, the shortage of an experienced IT workforce is clearly visible all across Europe, including Croatia.

Croatia has a variety of tech companies and is steadily evolving into one of Europe’s most well-recognized tech hubs. We believe its most valuable asset is its highly educated and competent workforce. The global pandemic reshaped the employment structure in Croatia, especially in the IT segment.

People can work remotely; therefore, the communities are not centralized only in Zagreb anymore.

The market has changed, and tough competition is pushing companies to provide comprehensive learning and growth opportunities beyond attractive benefits packages.

Many employees gravitate towards solid, stable companies, like EPAM, that provide multiple career paths and the flexibility to switch between projects or even technologies.”

What positives do you see in Split’s tech community?

“Building relationships is important for EPAM. The active community life of Split’s tech hub, combined with our expertise makes it a win-win for everybody.

We are excited to join Split Tech City’s events and meetups and are looking forward to showcasing our inclusive and diverse culture, supportive environment, and friendly colleagues.”

What made you join the Split Tech City community?

“All of the above mentioned… and maybe a bit of sun, sea, and Mediterranean mentality!” 🙂

In the end, is there anything else you wish to share with the community?

“We have a supportive environment, one of mutual trust and friendly colleagues all over the world. Collaboration is easy; our employees have the freedom to own their workload, their method of delivery, and decision-making, plus enough flexibility to work how they want.

Beyond our open positions, which you can easily find on our web page, we recommend exploring our external referral program. You can learn about the details and conditions on our website or contact our savvy recruiter, Karla Božić. Karla works from Split and is your contact for Split’s region. We hope to meet you soon!”
