Split Tech City

12.04.2023.

Every week – one new member! Yes, that’s how the growth of the Split Tech City community could be summed up.

More and more technology companies, agencies, and startups want to be part of a community that encourages mutual knowledge sharing, support, and networking. And all of that in the most beautiful city in the world, which we believe has great potential to become a Mediterranean Tech Hub.

Therefore, we are pleased to introduce minus5 as a new member of our community. Grigorij Talijančić, Lead Software Engineer, revealed more about this IT company.

Product-oriented

minus5 is a product-oriented IT company specializing in the development of innovative and complex sports betting solutions.

They currently have 60 employees in 4 offices – in Zagreb, Osijek, and Čakovec, and from 2022 also in Split.

At the moment, there are three employees in the Split office, and they are planning to hire new team members soon.

For 20 years, they have been working on developing their own platform for SuperSport, the market leader in sports betting, which they helped build the largest online business in Croatia.

They recently became part of one of the largest gaming groups in the world – Entain plc.

The goal of the minus5 team in the coming period is to expand the platform to the entire area of Central and Eastern Europe.

Technologies for everyone

The Split office is engaged in the development of a new betting machine, and in their work they use different technologies. The team would like to emphasize React with Typescript and Nx monorepos for the development of frontend solutions, and the Go programming language for creating backend services.

In the microservice architecture, they rely on Hashcorp technologies (Consul, Nomad, Terraform, Vault), and NSQ as a message broker, while Graphite and Grafana are used to visualize metrics.

Also, all services run inside Docker and rely on the AWS cloud platform.

In addition to that, the minus5 team uses Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and Firebase as databases.

“We guarantee all minus5 team members work on high-end systems and have the possibility of changing positions depending on personal affinities.”

Tech scene then and now

We discussed the changes in Croatia’s tech scene in the last 5 years with Gregorij, and this is what he had to say:

“We survived the pandemic, which greatly changed the habits of developers and employers. Remote work is no longer only a privilege of programmers working for foreign companies, but also the primary way of working in some Croatian companies.

Benefits such as table football and PlayStation are no longer highlighted as advantages in employment, but specific conditions and salary transparency are sought instead.”

Furthermore, companies in the tech industry nowadays emphasize other benefits enjoyed by their employees – such as additional bonuses, covered voluntary health insurance, paid lunch, and additional days off for any important moments in the employees’ lives.

“minus5 invests great efforts in the satisfaction of all its team members precisely through various benefits, with which we want to achieve an ideal work-life balance.”

Grigorij also pointed out that the tech sector has become one of the main export assets of the Croatian economy, and it can be said that it is no longer lagging behind global trends, but is even imposing them in some micro-sectors.

Welcome to Split Tech City!

As for joining the Split Tech City community, Grigorij points out that, in this way, they want to contribute to the development of the Split’s local and Croatia’s overall tech scene:

“We want to connect with people and organizations with whom we share interests and values to achieve a synergistic effect to the satisfaction of all involved.”

We look forward to our mutual growth and wish you welcome, minus5!
