Support our communityIn a world where education extends across numerous channels and crosses borders, initiatives like the Gifted English Project in Uganda stand out as symbols of hope and opportunity.
This time, we introduce you to the journey of a particular project and its founder, Kateryna Carvalhão – the challenges faced, and the promising future, emphasizing the power of technology and goodwill in creating a better life for all.
The project began with a simple yet profound mission: teaching English to children in Uganda – an essential first step towards a better life and education.
Initiated by Kateryna Carvalhão and Adolf Tumwine, the project faced early difficulties, including the tragic loss of a child participant. This student’s death deeply affected the team and left a lasting impact.
However, this unfortunate event also became a catalyst for the team’s resilience and their increased efforts in the project. Though tragic, this event was the first encounter with the harsh realities in Uganda and a lesson for the project’s future steps.
From the very beginning, the project explored innovative technological ideas to improve learning and connect the developed world with Uganda.
Initial learning sessions and connections between the children and their teachers were held via video calls, despite the weak and slow Internet connection.
In the later stages of the project, thanks to donations, the Internet connection improved, and the number of classes increased.
Conversations with friends and colleagues led Katya to realize that using online platforms like Coursera and YouTube could complement the current traditional teaching methods.
Recognizing the importance of engaging content, Katya also introduced customized notebooks with vibrant characters, making learning English not just educational but also a fun experience for the children.
Currently, the project actively teaches English – and other subjects and life areas depending on the availability and expertise of the instructors – to a growing number of children, supported by funds raised through platforms like GoFundMe.
Every lesson starts with the basics, i.e., the alphabet, driven by the goodwill of participants on both sides, along with technological support and equipment made possible by donations.
Challenges like monthly financial needs and logistical hurdles are actively being addressed, demonstrating the team’s commitment to long-term success and the willingness of volunteers and donors to support this commendable initiative.
Technology plays a crucial role in the project’s success, with minimal requirements such as a mobile device or laptop and a moderate Internet connection.
Through video conferencing and digital tools, the Gifted English Project overcomes geographical barriers, ensuring consistent education despite physical distances.
This approach not only improves accessibility but also prepares children for a globalized world, giving them a broader perspective and fostering interest in the future and development.
Collaboration with local volunteers, partners, and foundations is crucial for the project’s further development.
The Gifted English Project regularly engages 10 to 15 volunteers to conduct online courses, while local volunteers in Uganda contribute with their community connections and energy.
This collaborative environment not only enriches the children’s educational experience but also strengthens the bond between communities. Although everything on paper looks perfect, the project always lacks volunteers because the number of children and their knowledge needs are endless.
To sustain its impactful work, the Gifted English Project relies on financial support and calls for volunteers passionate about education and cultural exchange.
Whether it’s small monthly donations or remote volunteering, individuals can make a real difference in these children’s lives.
Every contribution allows the project to continue its mission of educating and empowering young people. You can join by exploring the “How To Help” section on their website or via the Gifted English social media profile on Instagram.
Besides the knowledge and opportunities you can provide and improve someone’s life with just a few steps, it is important to emphasize that the project also aims to improve the children’s lives outside of education: with regular meals in schools, organizing birthday parties, and celebrating holidays.
Of course, with the help of donations and volunteers’ engagement, the project is expanding and creating a bigger picture of the power of technology and its impact, showing that even remotely, changes are possible.
Together, let’s empower young minds and build a brighter future through education!
