Excellent news comes from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Naval Architecture (FESB) in Split and their FESB Racing team: the team achieved outstanding success at the international Formula Student ATA competition in Italy earlier this month.

FESB Racing

The FESB Racing student association dates back to 2010 and owes its longevity to motivation, curiosity, and the culture of knowledge-sharing among students.

Their success would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the students themselves, the loyal sponsors who support their work, and the general support of the University of Split, the Faculty, and numerous mentors.

They are extremely proud of the fact that they constructed their own car, with which they took an enviable 5th place this year on the Riccardo Paletti track during this year’s Formula Student ATA competition.

This is already their third car, and it should be mentioned that they are the only Croatian team that creates its own motorcycles and successfully competes in the MotoStudent competition.

Formula Student ATA competition

The Formula Student ATA competition is a competition of engineering students who design, build, and test their own racing vehicles. It consists of different disciplines that evaluate the performance, safety, reliability, innovation, and cost efficiency of vehicles.

These evaluation disciplines are further divided into static and dynamic parts: “Before the disciplines themselves, it was necessary to also successfully pass a detailed technical inspection – the production of the car, the quality of the welds and the selection of materials, the technical documentation and the correctness of the purchased components are tested and inspected during this phase.

Further tests include testing whether the car will remain in contact with the ground at large amounts of lateral forces, levels of noise, and the ability of the braking system, etc. Two full days are usually needed for this part of the competition. After successfully passing the inspection, it was time for the static disciplines.

The judges who examined FESB’s car come from well-known car companies such as Maserati, Fiat, Dallara, Ducati, and Alfa Romeo, and it was not easy to impress them, but the team still earned a high 5th place in the Engineering Design category.

After passing the static disciplines, dynamic ones are tested next: acceleration, skidpad, autocross, and endurance race, for which the only goal of most teams is to successfully complete it. Despite the unexpectedly high temperatures on the track, the FESB team also successfully completed the endurance race and achieved 5th place in it as well.”

This year’s edition of the Formula Student ATA competition boasted a total of 65 teams from all over the world and the FESB Racing team secured 5th overall place out of 22 teams in the internal combustion engine category.

A result of years of hard work and dedication

This outstanding achievement is the result of a multi-year project in which more than a hundred students participated over the years, with the help and support of respected professors whose knowledge and mentorship significantly contributed to this extraordinary result.

The key factors that enabled the FESB Racing team to achieve this goal were team spirit, tireless enthusiasm, and the wealth of knowledge and skills that were brought into every phase of the project.

Something both FESB as a faculty, and the FESB Racing team can be very proud of!

If you wish to find out more about the team and their work, their website and social media are your go-to resources, and if you are a student and want to join them, keep in mind that the recruitment of new members starts at the beginning of the academic year.

We’d like to congratulate the FESB Racing team on this success and wish them many more of them in the future! 😀
