Split Tech City is a community composed of well-intentioned and progressive companies, startups, associations, initiatives, institutions and individuals. Together we encourage and develop the IT sector of Split and the surrounding region.
Support our communityIn the northern hemisphere, today marks the last day of autumn. This means that winter officially begins its reign tomorrow and it makes for a fine time to reflect back on all the design-related happenings in Split during the past few months.
We wanted to bring your attention to Split’s design scene which sometimes flies under the radar – but that doesn’t make it any less lively!
The fourth edition of the Visual Culture Festival KOMBO was held in October. Numerous designers, students, and other creative people were able to attend lectures, talks, discourses, workshops, exhibitions, and concerts, as well as network and exchange ideas.
This year’s theme of the KOMBO festival was Context – Space – Design. The focus was on the interaction between man and space in the context of visual arts — direct and indirect interventions in space that shape our everyday life.
KOMBO is the result of the hard work of the DVK Association and this is what they shared related to this year’s edition:
“With the program of the KOMBO Festival, we tried to connect designers, architects, and sociologists, whose cooperation we consider necessary.”
Beginner Designers (Dizajnerska početnica) also had an active autumn with two workshops taking place! This is a program of creative workshops for children and young people under the guidance of professional designers from different fields of activity.
Through the topics chosen by the designer-mentors in cooperation with the program leader, the participants are introduced to the basics of design in a way suitable for their age, not only as a visual activity but also as a tool for creative, conceptual, and critical reflection on everyday life.
All lectures and workshops that are part of this program are adapted for everyone interested, regardless of previous knowledge and experience.
The Beginner Designers course is organized by the Academy of Arts in cooperation with the Croatian Design Society and with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture and the City of Split.
This autumn brought back Interactions!
Interactions, an educational platform at the Department of Visual Communication Design of the Academy of Arts in Split, returned after a three-year hiatus with new activities.
Once again they dealt with questioning today’s design practice in the local context – focused on local communities and oriented towards a common future.
The 3-day intensive event for students and professionals in the field of design and related practices took place in November, and was titled “Community Resilience: Towards Building a Shared Future“. It dealt with participatory community practices in the context of construction, i.e. speculation about the future.
Throughout its program, Interactions 2022 hosted a series of lectures, mini-workshops, seminars, and talks intended for students and professionals at the beginning of their careers, from the field of design and related practices – from digital technologies and contemporary art to psychology and sociology.
Even Split Tech City contributed to the liveliness of design autumn with a design chat held at Smartspace in November. Many individuals interested in design attended this event and spent the evening enjoying stories about their favorite topic because we gathered several young people who all have one thing in common – they work within different types of design.
While some deal with UX or product design, others focus on visual communications, Web 3, or fashion design. Some of them are freelancers, some work in small agencies, while others work in tech giants.
Therefore, it was interesting to hear different perspectives and experiences related to the topic of design!
We heard how they ended up in design, what they recommend to young people interested in that field, and what they predict the future of design will look like.
And last but not least – the design-related event which started during autumn and will end with a party in winter! The fourth edition of Split Nomad Gallery’s Xmas Art Fair is taking place from December 16th to December 23rd.
This art fair will welcome you at its chosen location – Smartspace – with the largest offer of graphics, illustrations, posters, and photographs to date!
Additionally, this year the Split Nomad Gallery team prepared quite a few extraordinary novelties: graphic novels, movie classics posters, and design books. Ideal for some late Christmas gift shopping, we’d say!
That’s all, folks. In the end, make sure you keep an eye on the work of these key design-players in Split because who knows what design-delights their creativity will bring in 2023! 😀
