130th edition of OpenCoffee Split

OpenCoffee Split had its first-ever edition back in 2008. Its initiator, Toni Trivković, felt that the local tech community needed a regular event where they could gather together and network, exchanging experiences and knowledge. Years passed, Toni’s initial persistence paid off and now we had the privilege to be a part of the 130th edition of OpenCoffee Split.

130th OpenCoffee Split meetup was held on the Summer Blues catamaran

True to the nature of Split, we lived our lifestyle to the fullest and held the event sailing at sea, overlooking our beautiful city. However, to truly showcase the work-life balance of living in Split, we did add an interesting panel discussion to the event in order to get the conversation going and to encourage knowledge sharing while we have fun on our sunset cruise.

International panelists

Our panelists all have one thing in common: they chose Split! Filip Krišto, Fedja Mirsilić, John Rogošić, and Andrei Zinkevich took part in the panel discussion moderated by Toni Trivković.

By sharing their insights about why they chose Split, what challenges they’ve faced, how they connected with the community, and all the benefits of our city that make them stay, they’ve offered a lot of very interesting points of view about their life and work here in Split and why, out of all the places in the world, they chose to move here and call this city their home.

Launching the new Split Tech City website

130th OpenCoffee Split was also the perfect opportunity to launch our new website. This, along with the new overall visual identity, was a months-long project that is now finally online for all of you to enjoy. We made some big changes for the better, so now let us tell you what were the guiding thoughts and principles behind this new design.

A truly hard-to-beat spot for a website launch
We create the content that builds

Fascinated by Split’s millennial history, we show love to our city by continuing to build it. The culture of our hometown has originated in Roman times. Therefore, we are picking up the threads of this ancient fabric and continuing to weave the stories of Split’s future by creating content that will encourage and inspire the new generations to take our beloved city into its bright future!

We openly share knowledge and experiences

Our community spirit is led by the example of picigin: a game in which the enjoyment of playing and socializing together overcomes the ego and hunger for victory. The best picigin player is a team player because, no matter how good you play, playing picigin alone is not picigin. In picigin, the ball is tossed around among all the players. Being a game of equality, everyone has to work together. The ones who are tossing the ball have to toss well for the receivers to be able to receive and toss well forward. And if the ball is about to drop, everybody runs to save it.

Everyone had an opportunity to connect and share knowledge and experiences with others

We used the picigin ball as an analogy for knowledge and experience and our community encourages its open sharing. This, in turn, brings about the strengthening of the entire community and Split’s ecosystem as a whole. No one is alone and no one can exist without connecting with others in some way. Our “ball of knowledge and experience” bounces from person to person, it is passed along and shared. It is just like in picigin: if kept to yourself, the ball is completely useless.

Split – a great place to balance business and pleasure

The greatness of our city is in its “just right” size. Split is not too small to require you to have to look for additional content elsewhere, while also not too big to waste precious time on commuting. We are eternally grateful that our hometown allows us to get from one of its sides to another in the blink of an eye because this allows us plenty of free time to enjoy everything we can think of: from spending time with family and friends to some quality alone time walking the streets of our beloved Split.

We are living locally and working globally

Split is amazing because it offers you a home while keeping you connected with the world. With its airport, the international ferry lines, and the highway, our city is well connected with any destination we might need to go to to do our work. So, why would we move when we can work with anyone in the world while enjoying the benefits we have here: islands and mountains within reach, clean air and water, healthy food, and a vibrant community?
Our hometown truly allows us to live locally and work globally, and for that, we would not change it for the world!

#SplitTechCityLifestyle getting international recognition

We are diligent and dedicated to our work. However, we also know that we can stay productive and motivated only with a well-balanced personal and professional life. We are happy to see that more and more foreigners recognize Split as an ideal place to achieve this, compared to other large and busy cities where this might be difficult.

In addition, we are also blessed with a city that has mild winters and a large number of sunny days. Therefore, we sometimes exchange our office with some of the beautiful and inspiring locations our hometown offers, truly living the #SplitTechCityLifestyle.

We are a community that always looks ahead

The splendid view from the bell tower of St. Domnius fills us with energy and pride. It allows us to look bravely into the distance. We love our hometown by always looking ahead and doing our best to bring about the future our beloved city deserves!

Join our community!

As in any game of picigin where new players are always welcome, our community is also open for anyone who wishes to join in order to learn something new and/or share their own knowledge, skills, and experiences. Therefore, feel free to reach out to us and connect – together we’ll enjoy everything Split has to offer and also build its future!

Researching is woven into my DNA, but I am a musician at heart. Interested in too many things and always curious. Forever in love with Split and enchanted by people who teach me new things. When I am not creating content about Split's tech community, you will find me in singing rehearsals, somewhere in nature, in the theater, or with my head stuck in a book. I do my best to live by the verse from the opera "Fedora" by Umberto Giordano: "Love forbids you not to love."
