Split Tech City is a community composed of well-intentioned and progressive companies, startups, associations, initiatives, institutions and individuals. Together we encourage and develop the IT sector of Split and the surrounding region.
Support our communityCulture Hub Croatia is a platform for education, creativity, and encouraging development through culture, that was officially founded in January 2017 with the primary goal of networking at the local and international level, as well as transferring knowledge from the rest of Europe, promoting artistic practice, and creating opportunities for learning and creativity in the local community.
They do this through various activities but what our focus is today is their Croatian Language Workshop.
Imagine yourself as a child sitting on your mother’s lap on a sunny afternoon. You are hungry and she has prepared you a snack you asked for. She lovingly feeds you peeled and thinly sliced apple slices that she took the pain to prepare earlier that day.
Now ask yourself: Did you know how to make special requests at that age? Did you study the grammar or vocabulary needed to get what you wanted? Did you commit words like “apple” and “slices” to memory?
It is likely that you have long forgotten your first special request and the many hours in which your caregivers and community members spoke to you using child-appropriate, simplified language.
Social interaction theory is part of the mosaic of theories that explain how language is developed and acquired.
In short, it emphasizes that language serves as a tool for human social life.
The Croatian Language Workshop offers an opportunity for you to participate in a guided acquisition-based language learning activity.
It is also the time and place for you to connect with others who are interested in improving their Croatian language skills. Additionally, it provides a space to create social interactions that will motivate you to continue learning Croatian.
Whether you are visiting for a short period, or have long-term plans in Croatia, learning even a few words in Croatian will improve your experience here.
Join the Culture Hub Croatia crew for the first in a series of Croatian Language Workshops! 😀
This first workshop will take place at PROSTOR (Plančićeva 2) on August 27 from 19:30 to 20:30 with a 30-minute social session after it. The workshop is entirely free but registration is required because spaces are limited.
The workshop will be divided into three parts followed by a 30-minute group social session.
The first section is what we call “context” – this is where you will be introduced to the linguistic elements involved in a specific real-world situation. It will include listening comprehension, vocabulary, and help with your pronunciation.
In the second section, you will be guided through a series of activities to practice what you’ve learned.
The final, third section, is reserved for a discussion on the workshop’s “context” while sharing some of your own experiences and providing insights into how the Croatian language impacts your daily life.
Ksenija and Carlos grew up on opposite sides of Canada but met in Quebec in 2017 while teaching English. Their passion for languages and travel has taken them to over 75 destinations across 17 countries.
After many years of planning, they moved to Split in April 2023 to be closer to Ksenija’s family and for Carlos to learn Croatian.
Before moving to Croatia, Ksenija and Carlos lived in Spain, where Ksenija mastered Spanish, and in France, where they both improved their French.
They have over 15 years of combined language teaching experience and they have developed a unique, student-focused approach to language learning which makes them the perfect instructors for Croatian Language Workshops.
Don’t miss out on this great language learning opportunity – register for the first edition of the Croatian Language Workshop and get learning at PROSTOR on August 27 from 19:30!
p.s. You can come and practice your newly acquired Croatian vocabulary at the 4th Split Tech City Festival – especially during the networking! 😉
